Unique competition for teachers, students

Winners being honoured.
TEACHER-STUDENT relationship is of a special kind, though not much thought of. Commonly, certain teachers whom the students abhor during student hood turn out to be the latter's role models at a later point of time. The obvious reason is the changing perceptions at different stages of life. Students get to realise the mindset of teachers at a later stage. Likewise, devoted teachers value each moment spent with students. Niceties of this relationship, so far, could not find expression for want of definite forums. Perhaps, it was to fill this vacuum that the Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC) chipped in recently to conduct a unique competition at the State-level for teachers, students, and the public, under the aegis of its monthly magazine, `Meenakshi Maruthuva Malar', in connection with the Teachers' Day celebration. Though peripherally it appeared like a test to assess their writing skills, essentially it was meant to determine the participants' depth of thinking. The topic for the teachers was `Manathil Nindra Maanavan' and for the students and the public, it was `Naan Kanda Nallasiriyar'.
The victorious teacher was S. Mahadevan, a Tamil teacher, of Sathakathullah Appa College, Tirunelveli and the fortunate student was R. Vaikundapattu, belonging to Udankudi in Tuticorin district. The district-level toppers in the competition were also honoured.
A strong relevance was attached to the prize-giving ceremony for the winners, by combining it with the occasion meant to honour the recipients of the Dr. Radhakrishnan Best Teacher Award, on Saturday. For this, the MMHRC found a co-organiser in the Department of Primary Education.
The winners, by receiving the prizes from the hands of the founder chairman of MMHRC, N. Sethuraman, had enough reason to be jubilant as the onlookers comprised of the best teacher awardees and the District Collector, S. Ramachandran.
